When designing a learning experience, it’s vital to respond to what the learner already knows.
We learn by integrating new knowledge and skill with what we already have.
To learn complex or higher order skills, we need a firm foundation to build on.
In order to learn, we need to stretch ourselves, through ‘desirable difficulties‘.
So it’s important to get the right balance of challenge and support: too easy, and we get bored; too challenging and we get frustrated and give up.
Learning is improved if we help learners develop self-awareness of their existing knowledge and of the learning process – metacognition.
